With Dustin Pedroia winning the AL MVP award yesterday, it turns out that Randy Newman's song just isn't true - short people really do got a reason to live. The diminutive (5'9" is what he's listed. 5'7" is more like it) 2nd baseman outplayed everyone and really deserved the award. And that is really tough for me to say being as he plays for the Sox. So, just like our list in honor of Albert Pujols, our AL MVP tribute list consists of other short guys and gals that overcame the odds and made it big.
Spud Webb - 5'5" - Won the 1986 Slam Dunk championship mainly because he could dunk a baketball because he was 5'5". He had a vertical that was out of this World. And he had a long productive playing career in the NBA, where 6'6" point guards are the norm. He proved that speed and dribbling ability are just as important as size.
Michael J Fox - 5'5" - Was in some of the best movies ever: All the Back to the Futures...wait, what else....hum. Teen Wolf? Yeah, that was alright. Always played characters that were young even though he was like 30 playing Marty McFly. Had a huge career on screen and television and now is a huge supporter of Parkinson's research, which he suffers from.
Verne Troyer - 2'8" - Yes, he was good as Mini-Me in the Austin Powers sequels, but the thing I remember most about old Verne is the Surreal Life, when he kept getting so drunk off 2 beers and getting naked or falling off his scooter, etc. Funny little alcoholic, that Verne.
Eva Longoria - 5'2" - I'd say she's made the most out of being short. She's married to an NBA star and has a hit TV show. Oh, yeah, she looks pretty good too. You look at that picture and tell me you care that she's a foot shorter than you are? No chance.
Sisqo - 5'5" - He's the goofy looking singer/rapper of 'The Thong Song'. What he never told you is that he often had to get on his tippy-toes to catch a view of the thongs he was so fond of. A one-hit wonder? Maybe. But when you sing about women's underwear, you are cool with me.
